D-Sub connectors are available in a range of sizes and shapes to suit a variety of applications. The key distinguishing feature of the D-Sub family of connectors is the D-shaped and hooded shell that provides protection for the contact pins and sockets. The ‘D’ shape of the contact housings makes the D-Sub connector distinct from other connectors. The contact housings come in two halves and are typically either die-casted from zinc or fabricated from steel.
The D-sub family of connectors is generally used where reliable transmission of data or power is required, and include configurations as simple as one power contact to as complex as dozens of pins with a combination of power, data and coaxial contacts. D-subminature connectors are popular in the computer and IT industry for their reliable connection and easy assembly as well as their resistance to corrosion and electrical noise.
The D-sub family is often used to connect signal and power cables between components in equipment such as industrial computers, medical equipment, security systems, military hardware and commercial aircraft. D-sub contacts are typically used for backplanes, patch panels, point to point wiring, plug-in connections and test access.
The family of connectors is classified according to other features such as number of contacts, color and contact material. Contact materials may include copper, beryllium copper, gold plated brass or phosphor bronze. There are various contact shapes that are used to securely mate to the contact pins/sockets. These may include: male pins, female sockets, female blade contacts, box contacts and holders, male sleeves and grommets.
A variety of insertion and extraction tools are used to facilitate mating and de-mating of the contacts. These may include insertion pins, extraction tools, ratchets and automated tools.
The basic principle of the D-sub connectors is that the contact housings are loaded with contacts which then mate with the corresponding contacts on the mating connector. The contacts are maintained in their correct positions by means of locking mechanisms which prevent them from being released when they are mated. The contacts are then held in place by backshells which secure the contacts and protection them from moisture and dust.
D-Sub connectors are typically constructed of two bone parts, the male side and the female side. The bone typically slide over each other to securely mate the two halves. The contacts are housed in the female portion and are then mated to the male pins during the assembly process. This locks the mating halves together.
The connectors also have strain reliefs in order to help absorb stresses from vibration and bending from cable wear. Further, dust and moisture protection is provided by cable entry seals and metal or plastic plugs. This helps to ensure that the transmission performance of the D-Sub connector is not affected by external environmental factors.
In summary, the D-Sub family of connectors provides a cost-effective and reliable connection for both data and power applications. The housings are designed to provide a secure connection between mating parts while also protecting the contacts from the environment. Ease of assembly, vibration protection, moisture and dust protection and reliable connections all make the D-Sub family an ideal choice for medium to high-density data and power applications.
