Tantalum - Polymer Capacitors is a type of capacitor that is seen more and more today in electronic applications. These capacitors are constructed with tantalum (Ta) and polymer materials, and are used as a miniaturized version of an electrical double layer capacitor. The capacitors are represented by six or seven digits, and these are usually preceded by the letters "TQC" and followed by "F" or "B" and a two digit code denoting the voltage. The 16TQC33MYFB is a representative example of such Tantalum - Polymer Capacitors and is most times used in automotive applications.

Application Field

The 16TQC33MYFB of Tantalum - Polymer Capacitors finds strong applications in the automotive industry and especially in automotive powertrain electronics. The use of these automotive grade capacitors is promoted by the fact that they can provide high capacitance in a relatively small package compared to other capacitors on the market. The capacitors are also notable as they are characterized by very low ESR, excellent frequency characteristics and high ripple current ratings compared to normal aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Other application fields of these capacitors include, high current power supply design, power filters, DC-DC converter, inverters, and hybrid cars and parallel connections with both tantalum and ceramic capacitors.

Working Principle

The working principle of the 16TQC33MYFB type of Tantalum - Polymer Capacitors is very similar to that of an ordinary electrical double layer capacitor, however the main difference being that these capacitors use a solid polymer as the electrolyte instead of solid hydroxide. In operation, when an electric field is applied to the capacitor, positive and negative ions in the polymer are adsorbed onto the oppositely charged surfaces of the aluminum oxide dielectric layer and a double layer is formed on the two plates. This layer acts as a dielectric and charge is stored in the capacitor. When subject to a high voltage, the capacitance decreases and when subjected to a low voltage the capacitance increases.

Additionally, due to the use of a solid polymer instead of a soft hydroxide in the construction of these capacitors, they also usually exhibit better mechanical properties such as better resistiveness to shock, vibration and temperature changes as compared to regular electrical double layer capacitors. The higher resistiveness to temperature changes helps these capacitors find use in situations where high reliability and long life is paramount such as automotive powertrain electronics.
