Backplane connectors are a type of electrical connector primarily used in the communications industry in order to provide a robust and reliable interconnection between operational elements. Over the years, the form and functions of such connectors have been evolving to meet the increased demands of this highly complex and ever-changing industry. There are three primary types of backplane connectors - Hard Metric, Standard and EMI/RFI.

Hard Metric Connectors

Hard Metric Connectors are designed for applications where high density connection of signals and power is necessary, such as in telecommunications and datacoms. They are modular (plug-and-play) solutions which allow very rapid assembly, while allowing easy network reconfiguration and providing uniform make/break styles. Hard Metric Connectors feature a polarized housing, latched signal/ground/power modules, and a series of pitch sizes for optimized transitioning between different serial bus configurations. This type of connector utilizes the V-MDRS Configuration Interface (VCI), which optimizes channel performance (minimizing parasitics and crosstalk) while providing repeatable RF characteristics.

Standard Connectors

Standard Connectors are a basic and inexpensive type of backplane connector used for light-duty applications. They are typically used to connect lower-order patch panels to each other, or very large boards. There are variations available with different pinouts, with 61- and 81-pin versions being the most prevalent. Standard Connectors are robust, and can handle power loads up to 10 amps. They have shoulder guides to ensure accurate mating, but sometimes don’t have the accuracy needed for high-speed or mixed-signal applications. As such, they are most often used for low-frequency signal levels.

EMI/RFI Connectors

EMI/RFI Connectors are designed to eliminate or greatly reduce EMI/RFI interference from interfering with sensitive electrical systems. They are available in male and female versions, with either a pin-and-socket or push-pull design. These connectors essentially function as an electrical filter, preventing radio frequencies and associated noise from passing through the system. They are particularly useful for applications requiring very high signal density or long transmission distances. EMI/RFI connectors can also handle higher power levels than standard connectors, and generally require shielded cabling and additional shielding to provide the best signal quality and protection.

Backplane Connectors are vital components used to provide reliable interconnectivity for operations in a variety of industries, especially communications. There are three main types - Hard Metric, Standard and EMI/RFI - each with its own distinct characteristics and advantages. Hard Metric Connectors provide a dense interconnection of signals and power, Standard Connectors are a basic and affordable solution, and EMI/RFI Connectors greatly reduce EMI/RFI interference.
