Film Capacitors

A film capacitor is a passive electronic component made of thin layers of plastic film separated by metal electrodes that store electrical charge for decoupling, filtering, timing and other applications. Film capacitors are also known as film dielectric capacitors, polymer film capacitors, plastic film capacitors, and paper capacitors.

Film capacitors are typically of very low ESR (equivalent series resistance) and ESL (equivalent series inductance). This is because their dielectric is made of thin layers of plastic film which are much thinner than the dielectric of the traditional electrolytic capacitor designs. As a result, they have much lower parasitic reactances, allowing the capacitor to become much more efficient in its electrical characteristics. In addition, film capacitors are highly stable, and don’t suffer from the age-related performance degradation that commonly occurs with traditional electrolytic capacitors.

171104K250F-F Application Field and Working Principle

171104K250F-F is a polypropylene film capacitor, with a capacitance of 250VAC, and a maximum operating temperature of 125°C. The 171104K250F-F is suitable for a wide variety of applications such as in power supplies, DC/DC converters, inverters, servos, switching power supplies, LED drivers, motor drive controllers, and other circuitry requiring high-frequency and high-temperature stability.

The capacitor is constructed mainly of a plastic film, metalized electrodes, and paper insulation substrate. The metalized electrodes form the electrical field of the capacitor and the paper insulation substrate increases the operating temperature and prevents any potential short circuits between them. As a result, the capacitor can not only operate at high temperatures, but also has a better dust resistance and longer life-span than electrolytic capacitors.

When exposed to alternating current, the electric field creates a displacement of the metalized electrodes, resulting in the generation of a voltage on both sides of the capacitor. This voltage is then used to charge and discharge the capacitor and store electrical energy. The energy stored in the capacitor is then released when the voltage is no longer present. This is the basic principle behind the operation of a film capacitor and 171104K250F-F.
