Terminals - Housings, Boots
Terminals are connectors used to interconnect two or more electrical components, including housings, boots, and other protective jackets. Terminals are mainly used in the manufacturing and installation of switchboards, distribution boards, motor starters, and other electrical parts.
Application Field
Terminals are used in several application fields, namely, safety, telecommunication, automation, medicine, and industrial applications. In safety application fields, terminals are used to protect personnel in a hazardous environment. This could include junction boxes, circuit breakers, receiver boxes, and other related equipment. Terminals are also used in telecommunication applications to provide connections between equipment and the telephone network. In addition, they play a major role in automation applications where they are used to connect controllers to sensors and actuators in order to collect data and control processes. Terminal connectors may also be used in medical instrumentation for signal interfacing purposes. Finally, terminals are used in industrial applications such as motor starters, automation systems, electronic systems, and power supplies, to provide a safe and secure connection.
Working Principle
Terminal connectors rely on a contact execution as the main way to interconnect two or more parts. The process begins by inserting the conductor into a connector and terminating it with a small clip onto the terminal. Some applications require a crimp connection, which is when a crimping tool is used to affix the terminal to the wire. The crimping tool provides a physical and electrical connection between the conductor and the terminal. In some cases, the connection is soldered or sealed with adhesives to provide additional protection against corrosion or vibration.
Once the connector has been inserted into the terminal body, a wire insulation removal tool is used to remove the insulation so that the conductor’s core is exposed. Then the insulation must be replaced along with the terminal conductor. To complete the connection, a terminal cover is used to protect the conductor from dust, liquid, or other sources that could cause a short circuit.
Terminal connectors are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, and can be intermixed depending on the size and type of connection. For instance, through-hole connections are best for larger wires and require the use of two-piece housing connectors. Smaller terminals, on the other hand, are most commonly used for smaller gauge wires and consist of single-piece housings. Additionally, terminal blocks are available, which allow multiple wires to be connected in a single connection.
Terminals are designed and tested to meet the most stringent requirements in terms of extreme temperatures, vibration, shock, electric surge, and other negative environmental parameters. Due to their reliability, they can ensure a secure and long-term connection while also providing flexibility and ease of installation.
