The year 1810 marked a major breakthrough for lighting, as it saw the invention of the world\'s first incandescent lamp. Before this, most light was provided by candles or oil lamps. The incandescent lamp, however, allowed for much stronger and brighter illumination, thus transforming lighting around the world.

Incandescent lamps are made up of a metal filament held in a vacuum and sealed in a glass bulb. When a volt of electricity is passed through this filament, it gets hot and produces light. By carefully selecting the filament material and controlling the amount of electricity, the required brightness and efficiency of the lamp can be tuned. Over the years, improvements in filament material and a better understanding of vacuum technology have enabled the development of much more efficient lamps.

Neon lamps, by contrast, rely on a different physics mechanism to generate light. Neon lamps are filled with a mixture of neon and other gases, typically at very low pressures. When a voltage is applied to the gas, the electrons of the atoms get excited by it and in turn emit light. This causes a glowing light that can be seen from a distance. Neon lamps are often used for light displays and signage, as they produce bright, colorful lighting that is easily seen in daylight.

Incandescent and neon lamps have been in use for over two hundred years now. While they are still widely used for lighting, they have been replaced in many applications by more efficient illumination sources such as LEDs and compact fluorescents. Nevertheless, these two types of lamps remain popular due to their affordability, reliability, and ease of use.
