Coaxial Connectors (RF) – 182118 Application Field and Working PrincipleCoaxial cables are used in various fields and applications which signal transmission is a requirement. One of the most common examples is coaxial RF connectors, which are used for radio frequency and microwave connections. As for the working principle, it is simply based on the principles of electromagnetic energy transfer coupled with conduction.
Coax is also commonly known by the acronym RF, which is defined as Radio Frequency. As the name implies, it refers to radio frequencies between 10 kHz and 300 GHz which are used to transmit various types of signals. The coaxial connectors can be described as an electrical connection between two electrical components with one conductor running in the center while surrounded by an insulating material. One of the most common types of RF connectors is the BNC or bayonet type. Its design is based on the principle of a bayonet connection, with two small pins on the inner sleeve that latch onto a second sleeve. The pins interlock and so form a secure connection. It is used mainly on instrumentation devices such as oscilloscopes, receivers, and signal generators. BNC connectors are also used to connect cable television systems as well as microwave and radio transmission equipment.
Another type is the N-type which is sometimes referred to as N-connector or N-plug. It consists of a threaded central cylindrical core with a stab-type contact inside. N-connectors are more robust and durable than BNC connectors and are typically used for higher frequencies up to 11 GHz. These kinds of connectors are commonly used in telecom applications, such as antenna connections, circuit boards, and telecommunications equipment.
The SMA is another popular connector type, as it offers a broad range of frequencies – from DC to 40 GHz. It has a threaded coupling nut with a constant impedance connection and is used for microwave transmission lines, antennas, and test and measurement equipment. The F-type connectors, also known as F-plugs, are connected to coaxial cables used for frequencies between 0.5 and 3GHz. They have two threaded screws which clamp onto the inner and outer conductors of a cable. These connectors can be used to connect satellite receivers, cable boxes, TV antennas, and modems.
Various types of RF connectors are used to connect signals to electronic components. Each connector is designed to handle a specific frequency and offers different characteristics such as impedance, losses, and signal integrity. They are becoming increasingly important in a wide variety of fields, from telecommunications and broadcasting to consumer electronic products.
