Incandescent lamps, neons, and similar lamps have been around for centuries, providing light for us to see our way and to carry out our daily tasks. From their humble beginnings due to Thomas Edison in 1864 with the development of the first practical incandescent light bulb, they have continued to become more efficient, economical and diverse with the improvements in lighting technology over the years.
An incandescent lamp is a device where a filament is heated to white-hot temperatures, emitting light in the visible spectrum. The basic principle of incandescence (the generation of light from heat) was discovered by Sir Humphry Davy in 1802, but it took 60 years for Thomas Edison and his team to develop a scientifically consistent and economically viable version of the incandescent lamp. The practical application of the incandescent lamp came in 1881 when the original version of the device was produced.
In 1895, William D’Arcy Ryan patented the first neon lamp, a gas-filled device that glowed in the dark with a faint, reddish-orange light (which has since been superseded by lamps containing other gases). The basic principle remains the same today: the electricity passing through the electrodes of the tube excites the molecules of the gas-filled tube, emitting photons of light in the process.
With their increasing affordability and efficiency, incandescent lamps and neon lamps became increasingly popular as a source of primary and secondary lighting. Incandescent lamps were primarily used for lighting interiors, while neon lamps were used for advertising and decorative lighting.
Today, incandescent lamps are used mainly in low-demand, residential applications, while neons are used in both indoor and outdoor advertising applications. Additionally, LED (light-emitting diode) technology is now being used for both residential and commercial lighting applications, providing superior performance and energy savings over traditional lamps.
In conclusion, incandescent lamps and neon lamps have been around since 1864, providing a unique and efficient way of providing illumination. As technology has advanced, they have become more efficient, economical and versatile, allowing them to be used in many different applications. They are now used mainly for low-demand lighting applications, with LED technology emerging as the more efficient and reliable choice for higher-demand applications.
