The light bulb, in some incarnations also known as an incandescent lamp, is an invention which dates back to the year 1866. In this article, we will cover the application field and working principle of the 1866 incandescent lamp. The incandescent lamp, a form of electric light source, is a device which produces visible light from electric current. Invented by Thomas Edison in 1879, the lamp consists of a glass bulb and the necessary components to generate light from electric current including a filament, a base, and electrodes. Electric power is supplied to the device by the electrodes and the filament is heated to a high temperature from the electric current. This filament then emits light of a range of colors depending on its material composition. The application field of the incandescent lamp is vast. It is widely used as a source of visible light in private homes, public buildings, and industrial settings. It can directly replace natural day light for indoor activities such as work and rest. The light brightness can be adjusted by regulating the electric voltage supplied to the lamp making it suitable for photosynthesis and other growth activities in horticulture and floriculture. Moreover, the high temperature of the filament is also useful in applications such as heating, as well as electrolysis and thermal desorption in the laboratory. The working principle of the incandescent lamp is quite simple. Electric power is supplied to the lamp by the electrodes and the energy is consumed by the filament which is heated to temperatures of around 2500K. The heated filament emits a bright light as a result of incandescence, a phenomenon whereby visible light is produced when the filament’s atoms are heated to a high temperature. This light is then emitted through the transparent glass of the bulb. The light produced is proportional to the temperature of the filament – the higher the temperature, the brighter the light. In addition to the incandescent lamp, there also exist other forms of electric lamps which are used for a variety of applications. Neon lamps, for example, consist of a sealed tube filled with gases such as neon, mercury vapor, xenon, or argon. When supplied with current, the gas emits a colored glow which is used for decorative, warning, and advertising purposes. Halogen lamps, on the other hand, consist of a glass envelope which contains halogen gas as well as other elements such as iodine or bromine. These lamps produce a bright white light which is used for medical, studio, and horticultural purposes. In conclusion, the incandescent lamp is a device which is able to generate visible light from electric power. It has an abundance of applications in both private and commercial settings and its working principle is based on the fact that particles emit visible light as a result of high temperature. Beyond incandescent lamps, other kinds of lamps such as neon and halogen lamps are also widely used in alternative applications.
