This type of lamp is often used for lighting up signs, as the brightness and colour are highly customizable according to the mixture of gas that is used. Neon lamps work on the same principle as incandescent lamps, but the gas in the tube emits light directly, instead of heating up the filament and radiating from there.
Aside from these two major types of lamps, there are also a variety of electronic ones, such as LED, HID, and halogen lamps, that are becoming increasingly popular. LED lamps, in particular, are becoming very popular due to their low power consumption and long lifespan. These lamps have one or more diodes, that emit light when a current passes through them, and they have proven to be extremely efficient, especially for home lighting and commercial applications. HID lamps (High Intensity Discharge) are used for industrial lighting and are available in different shapes such as Sodium, Metal Halide, and Mercury lamps. These lamps work by creating a plasma state in the enclosed glass bulb, which results in a bright light with a long lifespan. Lastly, halogens lamps are used in places where adjustable and high-intensity light is needed, such as studios and workshops. Halogens are usually enclosed with a quartz globe and have tungsten filaments, which are heated up by passing a current and emitting light.
In conclusion, the application of lamps has come a long way since its introduction, and now there are many types that can be used for different applications. Incandescents, neons, and other types of lamps all work on the same principle, using electric current to generate heat and ultimately, light. They have become essential in modern technology, and they will surely continue to evolve as technology progresses.
