Terminal blocks, or commonly known as wire to board connectors, are an essential component of any electrical device, connecting the wires within the device with the board itself. Due to their durability and availability, they can be found in virtually any piece of electronic hardware. From cars to TVs, computers to washing machines, terminal blocks provide a secure connection with reliable results. So what are they and what purpose do they serve?

Terminal blocks are typically plastic blocks molded from polyamide (PA6, PA66, etc.), which have one or more electrical contact points, or pins, mounted on a single, flat surface. These pins generally come in two styles: male or female. Male pins are typically longer than their female counterparts and are generally used to connect to a female pin mounted on the board itself. Female pins, on the other hand, usually contain a set screw which connects to a bare end of wire, and are typically the kind mounted into printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Terminal blocks serve two main purposes. Firstly, they provide an efficient and secure connection between two electrical components, such as a wire and a board. The second primary function of terminal blocks is allowing the circuit to be easily reconfigured. By replacing a wire on the block itself, a single wire connection can easily be removed, or a new connection made, without cutting or splicing existing wiring. This makes them particularly useful in appliances or industrial equipment where maintenance or component upgrades may be necessary.

The working of terminal blocks is relatively simple. The two pieces of the connector, the male and the female terminals, are mounted onopposite sides of the board or the wire.The male terminal pins connect with the female socket pins either by crimping or soldering. This creates a feedback loop that enables electricity to flow when a direct current is applied. The connection, however, also acts as a break in the current when it is switched off due to its physical design.

Terminal blocks come in a wide range of sizes and shapes, so that the right connection can be made for any situation. Depending on the requirements, a range of unique terminal block designs are on the market, such as pluggable, screwless, high current, PCB, single-ends, and double-edge connector types. In addition, all types offer different types of isolation, spacing, and other variables. Their construction is typically chosen to match the application, and many are designed for specific types of wire, such as ribbon, flat, or wire-wound.

Not only do terminal blocks offer an efficient connection, they also provide protection from electrical interference, oxidation, and short circuits. Insulating layers, like fiberglass or plastic, may be integrated into the design to prevent shock if touched while the connector is in use. In some terminal block designs, the insulation is also used to separate electrical signals from one another. This ensures that two signals are not mixed together, potentially causing a short circuit.
