Fuses are electrical components that are used to protect electrical equipment against abnormal levels of current or voltage. They are usually housed in a fuse box or switch board and may be integrated in electrical appliances. Fuses act quickly to trip the electrical system and shut off the electricity supply.
Fuses work by using a conductive filament (often a metal strip) to bridge the two contacts. When the current passing through the filament reaches a certain level, it causes the metal to heat up and eventually melt. This interrupts the current flow and thus lowers the risk of an electrical fire.
The size of the fuse determines the amount of current that can be safely allowed to pass through it before it melts and trips the electrical system. If too much current passes through the filament and the fuse is not able to trip, it could cause excessive heat and lead to an electrical fire.
The type and size of fuse that is required to be used in a circuit depends on the amount of current the circuit will be subjected to, as well as the maximum voltage the circuit is rated to handle. Fuses are typically rated according to their Voltage Rating (VR, volts), Continuous Current Rating (CCR, amps) and Interrupting Current Rating (ICR, amps).
The application field of fuses and their working principles vary depending on the specific fuse and circuit. For example, latching fuses contain a glass window with bi-metallic discs attached to it. When a current overload or short-circuit occurs, the bi-metallic discs expand and lift off the glass window to disconnect the power supply. Automotive fuses feature conductive tubes with a wire or strip on the inside which is heated by the electric current, melting the fuse link when the current is too high.
Modern fuse boxes usually contain a combination of standard, fast-acting and slow-blow fuses. Standard fuses feature a metal filament across the contacts which melts quickly enough to protect a circuit without being triggered by normal inrush currents. Fast-acting fuses are designed for slightly higher levels of current and will operate quickly to protect the circuit. Slow-blow fuses are used for higher current levels and are designed to tolerate short inrush currents without blowing the fuse.
Fuses provide important protection to people, buildings and electronic apparatus. They give installations the necessary overload protection while being cost effective and often easy to replace. As the application field and working principles of fuses vary, it is important to select the correct fuse to ensure a safe and reliable electrical connection.
