Terminal blocks provide a crucial means of making reliable electrical connection in the field of engineering and technology. The purpose terminal blocks are designed to serve is to keep the electrical connection of components and/or wires in a secure and robust way. Within the electrical machinery world, commercial electro-mechanical devices in particular benefit from the use of various kinds of terminal blocks. Also known as terminal boards or strips, terminal blocks provide a link between two or more conductors with an electrical barrier. The most common application for these electro-mechanical devices is the efficient and reliable connection of low-voltage wires and cables in the form of screw terminals or spring type push-in. Terminal blocks are also sometimes used to connect wires within the same electrical device.
The earliest version of terminal blocks came into existence in the 1930s. However, with the enormity of technological advance, terminal blocks have come a long way from their humble beginnings. Today, they are available in a variety of sizes, shapes, and multiple styles, ranging from PCB mount, spring terminal blocks, Pluggable Terminal Blocks, Wire-to-Board Blocks, and Wire-to-Wire blocks.
Terminal Blocks – Wire to Board
Wire to board terminal blocks are the present-day version of traditional terminal blocks. These blocks are typically fitted to a PC board in order to create a secure electrical pathway between the internal or external device and the PCB. These type of terminal blocks usually have a wire protrudin from each side that enter into a contact point in between two blocks.
Wire to board terminal blocks are usually used for signal connections such as digital inputs, outputs, along with connections for potentiometers, basic transistor, logic levels, and relay controls. In most cases, these are direct replacements for regular terminal blocks. The majority of terminal blocks available on the market today are also very easy to install.
When it comes to their working principle, wire to board terminal blocks are documented by the industry standards such as IEC/EN 60947-7-1, DIN VDE 0660, UL/CSA C22.2 NO. 43, and CSA C22.2 No 14. These documents state some of the basic parameters some wire-to-board terminal blocks must meet, such as current class, voltage, and catagorization.
Advantages of Wire to Board Terminal Blocks
The main advantages of wire to board terminal blocks are that they
- Are a reliable and secure means of connecting low-voltage electrical devices.
- Can be used to connect large amounts of wires in an easy and compact manner.
- Are very cost-effective and easy to work with.
- Require minimal maintenance.
- Have better long-term performance than solder terminals.
- Permit reliable connections that can be repeatedly dissembled and connected multiple times without compromising the electrical connection.
Conclusion
Terminal blocks have numerous advantages over regular soldering methods, such as quick and easy connections, low maintenance, longevity, and cost-effective performance. Furthermore, with the implementation of industry standards, the quality and reliability of these blocks can be further enhanced. Wire to board terminal blocks stand as one of the most popular types of terminal blocks today, as they are ideal for household and industrial practices.
