Tantalum Capacitors
Tantalum capacitors are capacitors that use tantalum foil as the anode and are one of the most widely used components in the electronics industry. In this type of capacitor, the anode is a foil of the inert material tantalum, while the cathode consists of a porous layer of manganese dioxide (MnO2). When an external voltage is applied to the anode, a layer of oxide forms on the surface of the foil and electrons migrate to the opposite side resulting in an accumulation of negative charge on the anode. Since the cathode is made of a conductive material, it now also experiences a displacement of electrons and accumulates on its negative side. This results in a charge difference between the two poles of the capacitor, leading to the capacitance effect.In this type of capacitor, since the material of the anode is metallic, the polarization effect of the capacitance is highly stable. This means that once it has been constructed, the capacitance value is relatively constant over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies, making it ideal for use in most general purpose applications.The main advantage of the tantalum capacitor is its high stability and low series resistance. This means that once it has been constructed, it will remain within its tolerance even when subjected to varying temperatures and frequencies, making it an ideal choice for most general purpose applications.
