The 1A0024-3 directional coupler works by using a series of quarter wavelength device elements to split the current flowing in the main line into two legs where one is the incident line and the other is the reflected line. These two legs, also known as the forward and reverse wave, are then connected to a coupling element which is an impedance that is adjusted to match the transmitted line impedance. The 1A0024-3 directional coupler uses two different methods to reduce the standing wave ratio at the ports of the directional coupler. The first method uses an E-plane stub as the coupling element to transform the current on each leg into voltages to be measured. The second method is to use the offset-E-plane technique, which consists of two offset E-plane sections that act as two orthogonal dipoles. These two techniques improve the system performance as they reduce both the standing wave ratio and the insertion loss.
