A Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diode is a semiconductor device that provides protection from transients, or temporary surges of electricity, and is commonly used in electronic systems. It is specifically designed to be placed at the input of electronic circuits to protect them from the harmful effects of over-voltage.The 1KSMB13CA is a bi-directional, unidirectional, or trans-directional transient voltage suppression device intended for protecting sensitive components against voltage spikes up to 13 Volts, while providing an additional current pulse of up to 1.5 amperes in a 5 x 6 mm SMC package. It provides Circuit Board (PCB) level protection from electrostatic discharge (ESD), lightning, and other voltage transients and is ideal for a wide range of industrial, automotive, computing, consumer, and telecommunications applications, including those in power supplies, 5G applications, and storage devices, as well as in consumer applications.The 1KSMB13CA diode is a surface-mount device (SMD) with a wide range of operating temperature capabilities between −55°C and +155°C. It is equipped with thermal shut-off protection for over-current situations and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. It is also designed to have a fast reaction time (less than 1 nano-second).The working principle of the 1KSMB13CA diode is based on an avalanche breakdown mechanism. This mechanism is used to provide protection against transient voltage spikes. When the voltage across the diode exceeds its peak reverse voltage (VRM), the diode’s internal structure scatters the electrons, forming an avalanche. This avalanche produces a large, rapid increase in current, which is then diverted into the ground, preventing the transient voltage from reaching the sensitive components. It is also capable of providing over-current protection by limiting the output current when the current exceeds its peak pulse current (IPP).
