A Zener diode, such as the 1N5337C/TR8, consists of a conventional diode with a heavily doped p-n junction. This p-n junction act as a voltage-controlled rectifier at voltages over a specified breakdown or zener voltage. When a forward voltage is applied across this type of diode, electrons move into the p-n junction to fill the empty holes at the depleted layer near the junction. When the applied voltage increases, the depletion layer of the junction will become thinner and thinner, allowing more electrons to move into the junction. When the applied voltage reaches the breakdown voltage, the depletion layer completely disappears and the current starts flowing in both directions through the junction.
