The 1SMB5933HM4G is a single Zener diode designed for circuit protection against surge and reverse voltages. The high–speed and low capacitance protection diodes feature 30V reverse breakdown voltage, 0.45A photo current, and a high–temperature package of 4.3mm x 4.3mm. This diode has a minimum reverse breakdown voltage of 25V, and is capable of 81mV at 0.56A, along with a low-capacitance of 0.12pF.

Application Field and Working Principle

The 1SMB5933HM4G is an ideal solution for applications such as automotive electronic equipment, camera systems, radio frequency, industrial control systems, and telecommunication systems. This Zener diode is designed to provide both protection against transient voltage spikes and continuous protection against high voltage swings.

When operating in its forward mode, the 1SMB5933HM4G acts like any other diode. Its two pins act like a valve that lets electricity flow in one direction, while blocking it from flowing the other way. When the diode operates in its reverse mode, the diode biases its Zener voltage, and it forwards a small current to bias its Zener voltage. The Zener voltage is the reverse voltage that causes the P–N junction to begin to conduct, allowing electricity to flow in reverse.

In order for the reverse voltage to cause the P–N junction to begin conducting, the junction must have a reverse breakdown voltage that is lower than the voltage being applied. This is the point at which the diode will begin to conduct in the reverse direction, and it can be determined from the Maximum DC Operating Key Electrical Specifications of the diode. When the reverse voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage, the junction will start to break down and electricity will start to pass through the diode.

When reverse voltage continues to exceed the Zener breakdown voltage, the diode will forward current in order to maintain its Zener voltage, resulting in an avalanche in some cases. The avalanche voltage is the voltage at which the diode forward current increases exponentially with increasing reverse voltage. The breakdown voltage and avalanche voltage are the voltages that determine the operation of Zener diodes.
