Single Conductor Cables (Hook-Up Wire) have been developed since 2006 for a variety of applications. These cables are typically used in a wide range of industrial, commercial, domestic, and other applications which require power, data, or control signals to be transmitted between two or more points. Single conductor cables are available in a variety of sizes and configurations, with the most common being solid core, hollow core, hybrid, shielded, twisted, and multi-conductor cables.

The type of cable chosen for a particular application will vary depending on its purpose and environment. The insulation type and rating, wire gauge (AWG) size, and maximum current carrying capacity will all influence the selection of a single conductor cable. The insulation type is important as it protects against hazardous electrical conditions as well as providing a mechanical protection and insulation against environmental conditions. The conductor gauge, or AWG size, determines the characteristics of the cable such as resistance and voltage drop. The maximum current carrying capacity is important to ensure the correct amount of current can be safely handled over the distance of the cable run.

Electrical current flows through a conductor in a single direction, creating an electro-magnetic field around it. These electromagnetic fields interact with their surrounding insulation and other conductors in an alternating current (AC) application. This interaction creates a phenomenon known as "inductance", which causes an opposing electrical force due to the electromagnetic flux field. In addition, when a conductor is placed in a magnetic field, it produces an electrical current as well, known as "eddy current". To prevent this current from flowing, single conductor cables are often shielded and/or incorporate aluminum foil or copper braid to reduce the effect of the induction. When shielded cables are used, the shield is connected to ground to provide a return path for the eddy current.

In addition to using shielding, the other common way to reduce inductance is to twisted pair cables. Twisting two or more cables together increases cancellation and reduces the amount of electromagnetic flux that is generated by the cables. This reduction in flux minimizes the effect of inductance and the resulting eddy current.

Modern single conductor cables have also been developed for the purpose of providing high data rate transmission over long distances. These cables often make use of twisted pairs, shield cables, coaxial cable, and fiber optic cable technologies to provide extremely low impedance paths for high speed data transmission over long distances. These systems are incredibly important for applications such as satellite communications, medical imaging, and data storage.

In sum, single conductor cables have a wide variety of applications. The availability of a variety of sizes, configurations, and insulation materials, coupled with the use of shielding and twisted pairs, makes these cables ideal for a variety of applications in which power, data, or control signals need to be transmitted over long distances.
