Introduction

This causes a spark to arc across the gap between the electrodes and the high-energy discharge within the tube produces a plasma which serves to constrict the arcing current allowing it to be discharged away from sensitive components.The arrester is self-resetting so it does not require replacement after discharge. This makes them cost effective against repeat lightning strike or other surges over a long period of time.
