Contacts have multiple purposes in everyday life. They are commonly used for communication, contact information storage, and personal connection. In the September 2016 issue of the Journal of Contact Mechanics and Tribology, a survey was conducted to understand the application fields and working principle of such contacts. The survey found that contacts are found widely in society, and they are especially helpful in the field of energy, particularly in electric vehicles and renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. Contacts can also be used in the medical field for medical imaging, monitoring patients, and controlling drug dosage. Additionally, contacts are also widely used in the military for the purpose of communication, identification, and navigation.
As for the working principle of contacts, it is unlike that of other electrical components as contacts are not held together by physical connections, such as bolts and nuts, but instead, they are held together by mechanical forces that act on the surface area within the contact. This is due to the mechanical properties and geometrical shapes of the contacts. With constant wear and tear, the contact surface can become deformed, making it less effective and eventually, requiring replacement. In order to ensure that the contact surface is constantly clean and free of dirt and debris, the contact is often covered with an insulative material that protects the contact and prevents debris from entering.
Contacts are also divided into two categories: AC and DC contacts. AC contacts switch the electricity on and off through their shuttles, whereas DC contacts are used continuously, usually for continuous power loads. AC contacts generally have a contact spring-loaded mechanism or a bell-crank lever mechanism, which opens or closes the contacts at a defined speed. On the other hand, DC contacts stay open or closed for extended periods of time and therefore, they use a detent mechanism to keep the contacts open or closed.
Contacts are also divided into two other categories, namely air and vacuum circuit breakers. Air breakers use air as the switching medium, whereas vacuum breakers are used in vacuum conditions to isolate the high voltage. Vacuum breakers are more reliable than their air counterparts and are used in extreme environments such as high altitudes and low temperatures. In addition to this, contacts are also used in different applications such as in industrial and commercial applications. Contacts are also found in various consumer electronic items such as washing machines, refrigerators, and entertainment systems.
In order to improve the working and the efficiency of contacts, various methods are employed. The contact material is the first factor that is looked at, which determines its hardness and resistance to wear and tear. Additionally, the contact surface diagrams are also modified in order to reduce contact noise and minimize contact wear. Finally, the contact spring is designed so that it can be accurately and precisely loaded, thereby increasing the contact life and providing consistent performance.
Contacts are essential to many sectors of industry as well as for applications in everyday life. They are used in electric vehicles, renewable energy sources, medical imaging, military communication, entertainment systems, and many more. Their versatility and usefulness make them a foundation to build upon for many industries. By understanding the application fields and working principle of contacts, engineers can further better their designs and improve upon current technologies.
