PTC Resettable Fuses are used in numerous different kinds of applications ranging from consumer electronics to heavy industrial equipment. The use of these devices is becoming increasingly popular as they enable manufacturers to install protective devices that can be simply reset when tripped. This type of product is also sometimes referred to as Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) devices. Basically, these fuses contain two small thermally sensitive components, namely a bimetallic element and a polymeric element. Together, these elements act as a thermal overload protection device.

When a certain current level is exceeded, the bimetallic element in a PTC Resettable Fuses acts as a switch and begins to heat up. This heat then activates a chemical reaction in the polymeric element that causes it to swell - this in turn effectively prevents the bimetallic element from cooling down and hence disables the entire PTC device. The current passing through the device is then reduced to a safe level and the device will remain inactive until the current has dropped to a safe level when the bimetallic element can cool down and return to it\'s original shape.

In a PTC Resettable Fuses, the bimetallic element is normally made from two metal layers, each with different thermal expansion characteristics. This means that when the current is exceeded the bimetallic element will bend, allowing the current to flow and trip the printer circuit breaker. The associated polymeric element then swells, thus preventing the bimetallic element from cooling down to reset itself. This, in turn, acts as an effective current limiter that will override the circuit breaker and prevent further damage.

One of the main advantages of PTC resettable fuses is that they are relatively inexpensive and can be easily installed into existing circuit boards. In addition, due to their low heat dissipation, they can also be used in instances where there is limited or no air flow, such as in a solid-state system. Furthermore, unlike conventional fuses, these devices are self-resetting and will not need to be replaced after being tripped.

PTC Resettable Fuses are ideal for a range of applications, including residential consumer electronics, industrial applications, automotive applications and more. They offer combination protective features that are not available with traditional fuses, including self-resetting current-limiting thermal protection, automatic shutdown in the event of overload, and temperature compensation. As a result, they significantly reduce the risk of hardware damage or component failure.

In 2016, a new design of PTC Resettable Fuses called the L300/16DR was released. This particular device features improved bi-metallic properties, allowing it to achieve a higher speed of response and a greater degree of protection. It also boasts an improved design that allows the device to be easily integrated into a wider range of applications.
