They comprise of two electrodes which are separated by an insulating medium and filled with a gas or solid-state dielectric. The two electrodes are connected to metal plates which act as an open-circuit when the voltage is below the rated holding voltage. When a transient overvoltage occurs, the gas in the GDT absorbs the electrical energy and ionizes, forming a current path between the two electrodes. This current path then triggers a spark gap which discharges the absorbed electrical energy to ground, protecting the device from damage caused by an overvoltage.

It has a rated short circuit capacity of 600 kA, a rated power frequency dry voltage of 20kV, a rated steep-front voltage of 17.7 kV and a rated maximum continuous operating voltage of 8 kV. The device is compliant with the UL 1449 standard and is available in a variety of housing styles including DIN rail mount, panel mount, and DIN rail clip.

The working principle of the 2036-42-SM-RPLF GDT Arrester is fairly straightforward. When the voltage of the electrical network exceeds the arrester’s rated voltage, the gas inside the device ionizes and creates a path for current to flow between the two electrodes. This current then triggers a spark gap which releases the absorbed electrical energy as heat, in the process protecting the device from damage caused by an overvoltage. Once the voltage drops below the rated voltage, the spark gap closes and the device is reset.
