Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are used for the protection of high-value electrical and electronic equipment from over-voltage and over-current damage due to power surges.

The 2046-60-C2LF GDT arrester is designed to provide high-speed protection against transient overvoltages caused by switching events or lightning strikes. It is suitable for use in circuits with a rated operating voltage up to 220 VAC and a rated short time voltage of 600 V. The 2046-60-C2LF is also able to handle high power levels due to its high quenching power rating of 30 kV. It also offers superior performance and fast response time compared to traditional metal-oxide varistors.

The 2046-60-C2LF GDT arrester has a simplified construction which comprises of two cascaded or ‘stacked’ Gas Discharge Tubes (GDT’s) connected in series within the same arrester body. Each GDT section consists of two electrodes, one cathode and one anode, separated by an arc gap, which is filled with a dielectric gas mixture. The electrodes of each GDT section are connected to the adjoining arrester electrodes through an energy absorbing resistor. The arrester is also fitted with an internal arc suppressor that acts as a spark gap.

When a transient overvoltage occurs, electrical current is channeled through the GDT arrester, triggering a spark to form between the two electrodes in each GDT section. This spark ionises the dielectric gas and creates a plasma in the arc gap. This plasma is able to absorb a significant amount of energy, resulting in a voltage reduction by up to 40 kV. The arrester then continues to absorb energy until the surge has been quenched.

Throughout this process, the 2046-60-C2LF GDT arrester is able to divert a large amount of electrical energy into a heat sink within the arrester body and away from the protected equipment. This helps to protect the equipment from damage due to excessive current levels.

Once the surge has been quenched, the spark dissipates and the arrester is automatically reset to its initial state. This means that the arrester will be able to provide agains further transient overvoltage events without the need for resetting or any other maintenance.

The 2046-60-C2LF GDT arrester is designed to provide protection against transient overvoltages, such as those generated by lightning or switching events, making it ideal for use in a range of applications such as industrial equipment, power supplies, motor control centers and machine tool safety circuits. The arrester is suitable for use in environments where dust, dirt and moisture could potentially reduce its performance and is rated for use in temperatures between -25°C and 70°C.
