Gas Discharge Tube Surge Arresters (GDTs) are surge protection devices used to protect electrical circuits from transient overvoltage surges. They are designed to provide protection against overvoltage transients caused by lightning strikes, electrostatic discharges, and other transient overvoltages. They work by diverting electrical energy away from the protected circuit, allowing the transient surge to be dissipated in a controlled manner. GDTs are usually included in all surge protection systems because they are very effective in controlling transient overvoltages that may be damaging to sensitive electronic equipment.GDTs are commonly used to protect electric lines, outlet receptacles and similar distribution devices from transient overvoltage surges. They are also used to protect electrical systems from lightning strikes, electrostatic discharges, and similar transient overvoltage events. GDTs work by diverting the surge energy away from the protected circuit, allowing it to be dissipated in a controlled manner. GDTs are typically installed near critical power supply lines, such as utility power feed lines and sensitive analog and digital system lines, to provide maximum protection against damaging voltage transients.GDTs also have an additional function known as a snubber circuit. The snubber circuit helps reduce the amount of energy received by the GDT by providing a low impedance path for the surge energy to flow. The snubber circuit is typically designed to absorb the initial surge energy and limit the amount of voltage that reaches the GDT. This helps limit the amount of energy flowing through the GDT and reduces the risk of it being damaged by excessive surge energy. The snubber circuit also helps reduce the size of the GDT needed for a particular application, as well as the amount of energy that needs to be dissipated from the GDT.In 2051, a novel type of Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) known as the SM-RPLF was introduced. This GDT is designed to provide higher reliability and increased durability in a smaller, more compact form factor. It works by utilizing a parabolic shaped barrier to disrupt the electric arc that forms when a surge passes through the GDT. This helps to reduce the amount of current going through the GDT, increasing its life and providing better protection against transient surges. The use of a parabolic shape also helps to reduce the amount of energy being dissipated by the GDT under different surge conditions, allowing the GDT to remain stable and effective.In general, GDTs provide effective transient overvoltage protection, reduce the size of the GDT necessary for a given application, and provide additional circuit protection via the snubber circuit. The SM-RPLF technology provides additional benefits, such as increased reliability, improved performance, and increased durability.
