Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are electric devices used to arrest incoming lightning transients, as well as severe energy disturbances caused by switching, induced voltages and other transient phenomena. In instances where failure of the GDT arrester eventuates in catastrophic failure, the decision to use arresters becomes even more crucial. The 2051-47-SM-RPLF GDT arrester is designed to operate in an extremely wide temperature range, from -54°C to 105°C, making it ideal for a variety of applications.

The 2051-47-SM-RPLF GDT arrester, also known as a spark gap or mixed-gas arrestor, is designed primarily for protecting telecommunications circuits from lightning related transient surges. In terms of its physical construction, the 2051-47-SM-RPLF has a durable metal body encasing two electrodes, separated by a dielectric spacer. Like other GDT arresters, the 2051-47-SM-RPLF contains a mixture of gasses, such as nitrogen and argon. The combination of these gasses and the two electrodes create a very low leakage current compared to other arresters, improved reliability, superior transient response, and superior protection from lightning and other transient events.

The 2051-47-SM-RPLF GDT arrester is designed to operate along two principal principles. The first is known as the “triggered spark gap“. This principle works by breaking down the dielectric strength of the GDT. The breakdown is initiated and sustained by an ionization process, initiated by the high voltage caused by the surge or lightning transient. This spark gap breakdown resists the flow of the current. This process is known as “triggered switching”.

The second principal, known as the “self-tripping arc protection”, works by breaking the arc formed when a current passes through the spark gap or mixed-gas. It works by creating a resistive medium that is sufficient enough to extinguish the spark or arc. This mechanism is also designed to eliminate the likelihood of dielectric breakdown caused by long duration surges, and prevent arcing damage from the low leakage current.

The 2051-47-SM-RPLF GDT arrester provides many unique benefits for telecommunications networks.
