They are used in electronic equipment due to their relatively low cost and large range of available voltages. Film capacitors have many advantages over other types of capacitors, including high breakdown voltage, good frequency response, and low self-inductance.

The 206PHC400KS film capacitor is an advanced model of film capacitors. It is a high-temperature polyester film capacitor with a label rating of 400 VAC from 0.1 to 0.6 μF rating range. It has a proven performance in high-frequency switching power supplies and filters, as well as in general DC-link capacitor applications. It is rated at -55°C to +105°C temperature range and meets all applicable UL (Underwriter’s Laboratory) and CSA (Canadian Standards Association) standards.

The capacitor has an aluminum dielectric made from a polyester film and is enclosed in a sealed polyester case. The case is filled with a non-flammable silicone fluid which provides dielectric insulation, effectively eliminating any high frequency sensing of capacitor parameters. This ensures reliability and consistent performance in the most demanding high temperature applications.

The capacitor works by having two electrically conductive plates (separated by an insulating material) that store electric charge. When an AC voltage is applied across the capacitor, an electric field is created and electric charge builds up on both plates. This causes the capacitance of the capacitor to increase while the current through the capacitor decreases. As the current decreases, the electric field reverses and the electric charge on the plates decreases. This creates an alternating current flow between the plates, which is what allows the capacitor to store and release electrical energy.

As with all capacitors, the 206PHC400KS film capacitor requires a certain amount of current to operate correctly. It has a maximum current rating of 0.63 amps, so it must be used in an appropriate power supply or filter.
