Incandescent Lamps
Incandescent lamps are the most common type of lighting used generally as lamps and light fixtures. These lamps contain a filament wire inside a glass vacuum tube in which the filament is heated by electricity and glows when in use. Incandescent lamps are a relatively low cost and non-efficient light source as only 5-10% of the energy is converted to visible light, the rest is lost as heat. The life of incandescent lamps vary significantly from as little as 800 hours to as much as 2000 hours depending on the specifications. The voltage and wattage ratings of these lamps are marked on them for easy identification
Neon Lamps
Neon lamps are a type of gas-discharge lighting which utilizes a neon gas filled lamp. These lamps are energized by a high voltage which causes electrons to break their bonds and form an ionized cloud within the lamp, exciting the gas and causing it to emit light. Neon lamps are different from incandescent lamps in that they use gas to generate light instead of a filament. They have no moving parts, making them much more efficient than incandescent lamps. In addition, they are also much longer lasting than incandescent lamps, typically lasting up to 10,000 hours. Neon lamps are often used in signage, traffic signals, marquee signs, and decorative lighting.
Application Field and Working Principle
Incandescent lamps and neon lamps are both used widely across a variety of industries and applications. Incandescent lamps can be used both in residential and commercial applications. They can be used to provide general illumination indoors and outdoors, in addition to being used in table and floor lamps. They can also be used in decorative applications and even in special effects lighting.
Neon lamps are primarily used in signage and display lighting. They are often used in marquees, entryways, storefronts, and roadside signs for branding and advertising purposes. They also are commonly used for special effects lighting in film and television production. Neon lamps also have some residential applications, such as accent lighting in greenhouses or other areas where a unique and vibrant light effect is desired.
The working principle of both incandescent and neon lamps is fairly straightforward. Incandescent lamps work by heating a filament wire which is surrounded by a vacuumed glass tube. When an appropriate amount of electricity is applied, the filament heats up and glows, thus producing light.
Neon lamps work by passing a high voltage through a tube filled with a special gas. This energy breaks the bonds of the electrons and forms an ionized cloud within the lamp, thus exciting the gas and releasing energy as visible light. Unlike incandescent lamps, no heated filament is required, thus making neon lamps much more efficient and long lasting than their incandescent counterparts.
