Backplane connectors, also known as vertical connectors, are electrical connectors designed to connect two printed circuit boards, along either a horizontal connector – such as a backplane connector – or a vertical connector such as an edge connector. Housings for these connections are either an in-line design, or a more advanced stackable design that allows multiple layers of boards to be connected. The 212609-1 series of backplane connectors is designed for use in electrical devices such as computers, medical equipment, and telecommunications systems.
This series of connectors are specifically engineered to provide reliable and durable connections. To ensure that they can handle a wide range of temperatures, conditions and voltages, they are made of thermoplastic polyester and a range of metals, such as nickel plated brass and copper. They also feature a dielectric (insulation) layer to protect them from abrasion caused by mechanical strain and crimp terminations for secure fastening. As an added bonus, the 212609-1 series also provides shielding from electromagnetic and radio frequency interference (EMI/RFI).
The 212609-1 series of backplane connectors can be further divided into the housings and discrete mating pieces categories, the former being a modular field connection. As for how backplane connectors function, the basic concept is that they link together two connectors on opposing boards. Essentially, the male part is plugged into the female part and the pins make contact, thus creating the electrical connections needed. This provides an efficient and reliable signal transfer between boards.
In order to adequately ensure secure connections and prevent shorting, it is important that the contact pins’ insulators be hard enough for a secure fit and their surface finished to reduce any chances of arcing.
