The synthesizer core consists of a programmable and static phase-locked loop (PLL) integrated circuit and a differential and/or single-ended varactor-tuned voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). These components provide the necessary programmability, flexibility and control that allows the 2308A-1DCGI8 to accurately reproduce the frequencies that are programmed into its memory.
The PLL core is designed to generate clocking signals with low phase noise jitter performance. This is accomplished by using a fractional-N frequency synthesizer, which allows for frequency resolution of up to 0.1 Hz or better. The PLL also features a robust control loop that provides superior dynamic range and maximum flexibility in terms of operating conditions.
The 2308A-1DCGI8’s VCO is designed to provide a precise, stable frequency output. The VCO core is composed of a differential varactor-tuned voltage-controlled oscillator with precise linear frequency control. This feature allows the VCO to precisely hold a user-specified frequency within fractions of a Hertz of the specified center frequency.
