The 23S05-1HDCG is a clock generator based on a phase locked loop (PLL), that provides the generation of precise clock signals. This clock generator can produce very precise signals of different frequencies and is specially useful for high performance systems that require precise timing. In addition, the 23S05-1HDCG incorporates two synchronizing outputs that can be used to synchronize satellite clock sources and to synchronize to a Grandmaster Clock.
The 23S05-1HDCG works by having two signal paths that are locked to each other, through a process called phase-locking. The signal being processed by the PLL is called the reference signal and the signal that is generated by the PLL is called the output signal. The PLL determines the relationship between the reference signal and the output signal and makes them both the same frequency. Essentially the PLL is a frequency multiplier, and the frequency at which the output signal varies is based on the reference signal.
The 23S05-1HDCG contains all the necessary controlling logic to synchronize its output frequency with a reference clock frequency. The logic circuitry consists of a phase detector, a voltage controlled oscillator, a digitally controlled oscillator, a frequency divider and a phase/frequency synthesizer. The phase detector detects any differences in phase or frequency between the reference signal and the output signal and provides a control signal to the voltage controlled oscillator. The voltage controlled oscillator generates an output signal at a frequency based on the control signal received from the phase detector and the frequency divider reduces the output frequency.
The frequency synthesizer is responsible for generating the output signal. It takes the frequency generated by the voltage controlled oscillator and divides it down to the desired output frequency. Finally, the phase/frequency synthesizer sums the two signals and generates the precise output signal.
