24-80005 Application Field and Working PrincipleIntroduction24-80005, formally known as the Fault-Induced Delay (FID) Relay, is a smart relay specially designed mainly for power system providing fast and reliable power system protection. In this paper, the application field of FID relay and its working principle are discussed in details. Application FieldFID relays are mainly used for automatic device protection and fault location in power systems. It can detect faults on power lines such as short circuit, single-phase, ground, overload and phase-to-phase faults. It can also isolate and disconnect the faulty section in the power system and restore power flows in the healthy section. Therefore, FID relays are able to maintain the reliable and continuous operation of the power system.FID relays are also suitable for applications in industrial processes, motor control circuits and other industrial settings. They are able to provide short circuit protection for any equipment with parallel connected cables. Furthermore, FID relays can be used for the protection of nonlinear loads such as arc furnaces, welding equipment, and non-sinusoidal inductive loads. Another application field of FID relays is in the protection of transformers. They are widely used to protect distribution transformers from faults such as overcurrent, saturation and any other fault that may affect the normal operation of the transformer. The use of FID relays in the protection of transformers can greatly reduce the possibility of transformer failure due to faults. Working PrincipleFID relays rely on two main working principles: digital signal processing and temperature sensing. During normal operation, the digital signal processing principle works by analyzing the signals from the current transformer and the voltage transformer. It processes the signals in order to detect any changes that may indicate the presence of a fault in the power system. The temperature sensing principle is mainly used for the protection of both current and voltage transformers. It detects any additional heat that may be created by faulty current or voltage in the transformer. When the additional heat may cause any risks of damage, the FID relay will immediately trip and disconnect the line. ConclusionFaults in power systems can cause serious damages and interrupt reliable power flows. In order to reduce the risk of failure, the use of FID relays is essential. The FID relays are suitable for protection of power lines, industrial processes, motor control circuits and distribution transformers. They use both digital signal processing and temperature sensing working principles to detect and locate faults, and to reduce the possibility of transformer failure due to faults.
