24646R is a DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS Evaluation Board from Microchip. This board is designed to evaluate the family of off-line SMPS that fit the 24646 Series of control ICs family. This evaluation board allows users easily prototype their own custom circuit using the 24646 IC. It enables users to quickly test andevaluate the performance of the 24646 series ofcontrol ICs with different input voltage, output powerand load conditions.

The 24646R Evaluation Board works based on the PWM technique. The board can support both voltage and current mode control. The voltage mode control provides fast response time and stabilized output voltage even when faced with fast changing inputs. The current mode control helps reduce the output voltage ripple (assuming the inductor and capacitor value for output filter are increased proportionally).

This board consists of a 24646 control IC, a switching power transistor, heat-sink, diodes, voltage clamping diode, common mode filter, opto-coupler, capacitor filter, etc. The 24646 IC receives input voltage from the power source and test points where user’s anticipated external load is connected. The 24646 IC regulates and adjusts the output voltage with the help of a comparison between the feedback voltage and reference voltage. A voltage clamping diode also helps prevent the over-voltage from a transformer in case of over current or over voltage condition.

The output voltage from the IC is then connected to the power transistor via an opto-coupler.The power transistor is used for switching the conduction of current from input power source to the output load. The power transistor converts the input AC voltage to the equivalent of DC voltage. Next, the common mode filter is used to reduce high-frequency noise generated by the switching of the power transistor. Finally, the output voltage from the common mode filter is then fed to a capacitor filter to smooth out the remaining ripple, producing a clean output voltage.
