The 24AA00/S is a stand-alone Electrically-Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM) providing the features of low-voltage operation, low-power consumption and high-endurance EEPROM. Working Principle
The 24AA00/S is a type of non-volatile memory, meaning that its stored data is retained even when the power supply is removed. Electrically-erasable means that the memory cells of the device can be erased and the data can be re-programmed digitally, allowing for fast and easy data manipulation. The 24AA00/S has an internal frame counter that automatically increments its address parameter with each data write operation.
The 24AA00/S is based on the use of floating gate transistors, also known as FNTFETs. FNTFETs are composed of thin insulating layers of silicon dioxide sandwiched between layers of polysilicon, which are connected to the data line. The difference in voltage between the control lines and the data line creates an electric field, which can turn the transistor either on and off. This enables the transistor to store data in the form of binary bits.
The 24AA00/S consists of 16 pages of data, each page corresponding to 32 bytes of data. Data is written and read from the memory in a serial fashion. Data can be written or erased one byte at a time by directly writing data to the memory via the data line. WR bit of the Status Register can also be used to enable write operations. The WR bit can be manipulated by writing to the Status Register, with a logic zero setting the write enable register.
The 24AA00/S also includes safety access feature to protect data from accidental erasure. This feature limits the write operation to certain defined addresses. The Status Register must be programmed with the Access Code before any write access is authorized. The correct Access Code is necessary in order to enable writes to the memory.
