It offers an array of internal operation options such as Auto-Addressed Program/Erase, Random Entry Read/Write and held page write.
When operating in I2C bus mode, the device can be addressed using 8- or 16-bit formats. The first 7 bits of the address are fixed and the 8th bit is a write/read (WR) bit. In the 16-bit format, the 8th and 15th bit are the direction bits, while the other bits are the address. In SPI bus mode, the device is addressed using up to 32-bits. The device also has byte-addressable control commands. When operated in I2C mode, an integrated Address Latch is used to store the device address.
The device is programmed and erased in-circuit, with no need for external components and supplies. The programming algorithm consists of the following steps. First, a signal is sent to the device to set up the address pointer. Then, the data to be written is serially sent to the device. This data is latched in the internal data register and then written to the EEPROM array. The next step is to send the control bits that initiate programming operation. Finally, the device sends back an acknowledge bit and the completion of the programming operation.
Erasing the device requires similar steps. A signal is sent to the device to set up the address pointer. Then, the control bits are sent to the device to initiate the erase operation. The following step is to provide the voltage pulse and finally, the device sends an acknowledgement bit as the completion of erasing.
