The two electrodes are separated by a thin dielectric layer which is an electrical insulator. This dielectric layer allows electric field lines to form between the two electrodes. When a voltage is applied, electric charge is drawn to the edges of the electrodes and across the dielectric layer, forming an electrostatic field between the two electrodes.When the voltage is applied, the electric charge stored in the capacitor accumulates on the opposite electrodes until the capacitance is reached, at which point the capacitor is fully charged. When the voltage is removed, the capacitor gradually releases the stored energy and discharges back to its original level. When used in conjunction with other components such as resistors or inductors, film capacitors can be used to filter signals, reduce noise interference, and stabilize the power supply of electrical systems.
