257 Application Field and Working Principle
Lamps are a fundamental tool for lighting a room or providing a specific setting in any environment for a range of purposes, from illumination in a home or office to outdoor street lighting. Two of the most common lamp types are incandescent lamps and neon lamps. In this article, we explore the applications and working principles of these two lighting sources in order to help decide which one best suits your needs.
Incandescent Lamps
Incandescent lamps make use of electricity to heat a tungsten filament inside a glass bulb, which eventually produces light. The wattage and size of the bulb determine the amount of light emitted, and there are various shapes, styles and sizes of incandescent lighting available on the market today. Incandescent lamps are used in a wide range of lighting applications, including ambient lighting sources, task lighting, display lighting and decorative lighting sources. Incandescent lamps are considered to be very energy inefficient, consuming a large amount of electricity to produce the same amount of light as other types of lighting.
Neon Lamps
Neon lamps are gas-filled tubes which produce light when electricity is passed through them. Neon gas is inert and does not react to electricity; instead, it is contained with a mirrored surface, which helps to produce a spectral color that is specific to each gas used in the lamp. Typical gas mixtures used in neon lamps are argon and helium. Neon lamps produce pleasant light and are available in various shapes, sizes, and colors. Neon lamps are used for decorative and ambient lighting in a range of environments, from advertisements and signs to home and commercial lighting.
Working Principles
The working principle of an incandescent lamp is relatively simple. A copper coil is used to form the tungsten filament, which is then enclosed within a glass bulb. An electrical connection is then made to the top of the filament and the bottom of the filament is connected to a metal contact. The voltage across these two contacts is what provides the electric current necessary to heat up the metal filament, forming a filament which will produce light.
Neon lamps utilise similar principles of electric current, but the gas used to fill the tube greatly changes the colour and intensity of the light emitted. The gas mixture is contained within the tube, and a substantial voltage is applied across the two contacts to form an electric arc, which produces fluorescent light. The voltage required to start the electric arc is determined by the gas used and the size and construction of the tube. It is possible to adjust the colour of the light emitted by changing the gas mixture, as well as by adjusting the current applied to the gas.
Conclusion
Incandescent lamps and neon lamps are two very popular sources of lighting available today. Both utilise electricity, in different ways, to produce light and can be used in a range of different lighting applications depending on the required output. Understanding the working principles of these lamps can help when considering the most appropriate lighting source for a specific application.
