D-Sub connectors are a type of electrical connectors characterized by their trapezoidal shape and multiple-pin configurations, which is why they are also known as D-shaped plugs and sockets. This type of connector consists of a molded backshell that encloses the various internal components and connectors that mix configurations of two to several hundred pins.

Application Field

D-Sub connectors are typically used in computer, military, industrial control, telecommunications and medical equipment. However, since these connectors come in so many shapes and sizes, individual applications can vary greatly. Typically, 15- and 25-pin D-Sub connectors are used in computing applications, and when dealing with computer-related and industrial applications, 9- and 37-pin connectors are preferred.

Working Principle

The D-Sub is locking connector which features a wide variety of contact arrangements. A spring-loaded latch mechanism on the connector body holds two plugs together, preventing any accidental disconnects. The shell is generally made of metal, and enough strain relief is used, which means that cable is held still and in place. The pins "male" and sockets "female" are in line, in a certain pin arrangement that matches and fits the reason of use.

The complete connection process takes place in two functions: firstly, the electrical connection and secondly, the mechanical connection attachment. As the plug is inserted, the pins and sockets touch to make the electrical connection through metal contact surfaces. This is followed by a spring loaded latch mechanism that locks together the two plugs.
