RF (Radio frequency) and EM (electromagnetic) shielding and absorbing materials have a long history of usage in numerous application fields. They work by using a combination of technologies such as shielding, absorbing, reflecting, and dampening to provide protection against unwanted electromagnetic interference (EMI). While many people think of shielding and absorbing materials as primarily for the purpose of reducing RF and EM signals, they can also be used to improve performance in a variety of other applications.Examples of application fields in which shielding and absorbing materials are utilized include consumer electronics, such as cell phones, electronic medical equipment, automated test equipment, military aircraft and associated electronics, and aerospace and defense systems. Examples of applications for which shielding and absorbing materials are useful include reducing the radiation levels of computer monitors and television sets, reducing the noise generated by audio systems, and improving the performance of high-frequency electronic products.
In order to understand how shielding and absorbing materials work, it is important to first look at the different types of materials available. There are two major categories of materials which can be used for this purpose: conductive and absorptive materials. Conductive materials are used to create a shield against RF and EM signals. This can be done through the use of layered metal layers which act as a Faraday cage, effectively blocking the electromagnetic signals from passing through. On the other hand, absorptive materials work by absorbing the electromagnetic energy, which helps to reduce the overall amount of radiation emitted.
In order to effectively utilize shielding and absorbing materials, it is important to understand the various parameters which can be used to determine the effectiveness of the material. These parameters include shielding effectiveness, attenuation loss, and EMI (electromagnetic interference) performance. Shielding effectiveness is measured in dB (decibels) and is a measure of how well the material is able to block electromagnetic signals from reaching the interior of a structure or device. Attenuation loss is the amount of signal reduction caused by the material. Lastly, EMI performance is a measure of the ability of the material to reduce the amount of interference created by electrical and electronic components which are placed in the same environment as the shielding material.
Once the correct shielding and absorbing material has been selected, it is important to understand how to properly install it. Depending on the specific application, the material may need to be applied and then secured to the surface area. In some cases, the material may need to be secured using adhesives. In other applications, the material may need to be installed as a single piece.
Finally, it is important to remember that shielding and absorbing materials are not foolproof. They cannot block all RF and EM signals, and in some cases, they may not be able to provide adequate protection against all types of interference. However, with the right selection of materials and proper installation, these can be effective tools for reducing the amount of unwanted interference generated by electronic devices.
