RF (Radio frequency) and EM (electromagnetic) shielding and absorbing materials have a long history of usage in numerous application fields. They work by using a combination of technologies such as shielding, absorbing, reflecting, and dampening to provide protection against unwanted electromagnetic interference (EMI). In order to understand how shielding and absorbing materials work, it is important to first look at the different types of materials available. There are two major categories of materials which can be used for this purpose: conductive and absorptive materials. Conductive materials are used to create a shield against RF and EM signals. This can be done through the use of layered metal layers which act as a Faraday cage, effectively blocking the electromagnetic signals from passing through. On the other hand, absorptive materials work by absorbing the electromagnetic energy, which helps to reduce the overall amount of radiation emitted.
