Common Mode Chokes are an essential and common component used today in the many applications where electromagnetic interference (EMI) needs to be eliminated. In a Common Mode Choke, 2744051447 frequency currents are canceled with a duel-coil assembly that incurs negligible signal losses.
Commonly found in power supplies, differential line receivers, instrumentation, and high frequency communications, a Common Mode Choke is used to suppress unwanted electromagnetic interference, enhance signal fidelity, or provide a balancing impedance for an integrated circuit. It works by providing an electromagnetically isolated equipotential plane in which interference is rejected and therefore allowing only desired frequencies to pass through.
The working principle of a Common Mode Choke is simple but effective. It consists of a symmetrical winding structure that is made up of two individually wound single-ended windings. A single-ended winding has twice the inductance of a full-bridge winding. This increases the impedance of a windings inductor and thereby reduces induced currents from outside sources. Since there is an equal amount of coil wound in each direction, any interference or noise that is not common-mode in nature will automatically cancel due to the symmetry of the setup.
The principle is based on the ability of the dual-coil to choke off unwanted noise while still allowing desired signals to pass through. When alternating current flows through both coils in an identically opposite phase, the electrical noise is reversed to opposing directions and subsequently canceled. This is the basic principle behind the Common Mode Choke: to reject noise and unwanted signals while still allowing desired signals to pass through with minimal losses.
Common Mode Chokes are used in a variety of applications. In power supplies, they are used to minimize EMI created by the switching of power supply stages. In analog and digital communications, Common Mode Chokes are used to filter out high frequency noise, interference and spuriously generated signals that could impair the reception of desired signals. In differential line receivers, it is used to provide a balun for converting single-ended signals to balanced, and finally in instrumentation, it is used for current and voltage isolation in order to reduce interference and improve accuracy.
Common Mode Chokes have become an indispensable component in the EMI/EMC filter designs of today due to their superior effectiveness in reducing switch mode power supply-generated noise. Although a Common Mode Choke is relatively simple in design, it is a powerful tool for protecting sensitive circuits from the damaging and degrading effects of electromagnetic interference.
