Common Mode Chokes, or CM chokes, is a specialized type of electronic component used to suppress high-frequency noise in electronic applications. The most common application of CM chokes is in power supplies and power-converter circuits, where it helps reduce the level of high-frequency ripple content. Other applications can be found in communication systems, where the chokes are used to ensure the proper operation of high-speed modems and other communication systems.
The main functional element of a CM chokes is the toroidal core. A toroidal core consists of several layers of insulated copper wire wound around a moulded plastic or metal core. However, if the impedance of each circuit is unequal, then the electric potential of the two circuits can either be different or remain equal, depending on the higher impedance.
A CM choke is designed to provide a balanced, common mode impedance across two or more circuits by adding an inductive reactance across the circuit that is equal to the difference between the two voltages. This ensures that the voltage fluctuations on the signal line do not exceed the set level. A properly designed CM choke can thus effectively reduce noise in the circuit by up to 40dB.
CM chokes are available in many different shapes and sizes, and with different coil configurations, depending on the purpose.
