Flat Flex (also known as Flexible Flat) and Ribbon Jumper Cables are two different types of cable technologies used in electronics applications. Flat Flex terminology can be confusing, but it is basically a type of flat cable with thin strands of conductors mounted in a flexible, flat configuration.
A Flat Flex (FF) cable consists of multiple stranded or solid conductors arranged in parallel, united by a thin layer of insulation. This type of cable has been used for decades in various military and commercial aviation applications. The advantage of a FF cable is that it can go around tight corners and curves without being damaged or deformed, while still providing a faster signal transmission than a regular cable, or wire.
Ribbon Jumper Cables (RJCs) are similar to FF cables in that they are also flat and flexible. However, the conductors of an RJC are arranged in single or multiple “ribbons”. This allows the junction of the ribbon conductors to be folded, and makes them ideal for high-speed signal transmission, as well as miniature applications in places where space is at a premium.
