2884 Application Field and Working Principle Evaluation Boards – Expansion Boards, Daughter Cards
The 2884 Evaluation Board can be used to explore the features and benefits of the Intel 8279 Programmable Keyboard/Display Interface. The board is an industry-standard computer bus containing one socket, four LEDs and eight switches. The 2884 evaluation board comes with a battery-powered crystal connection for the clock/timing circuit. The board will reduce your design time and effort, allowing you to explore and evaluate the benefits of the 8279 device with minimal engineering effort. Furthermore, you can also save your design efforts by using the 2884 evaluation board for prototypes.
The 2884 Application Field and Working Principle Evaluation Board includes two 64-pin sockets for the 8279 Chip Set. It includes a 4-bit LCD display, four LEDs for status display, and 8 switches for input. In terms of power, the board is powered by a 3.3V regulator that provides 5V for the external device, and can run on batteries or by external power supplies. The Clock/Timing circuit has a battery-powered crystal connection to provide a time base. This allows the board to become the master of its own operation and will reduce any interference with other devices that may be connected.
The 2884 Evaluation Board’s main job is to interface between the 8279 itself and the external UART, keyboard, LCD and printer. The 8279, a programmable peripheral interface device, enables programmable communication between the microprocessor and the devices. It incorporates programmable features such as automatic read/write operations, address decoding, and interrupt handling, that eliminate the need for software-programmed port manipulation. The 8279 device can be used to control the UART, keyboard matrix, LCD screen, or printer port.
When using the 2884 Application Field and Working Principle Evaluation Board, the 8279’s programming is done through software. The 8279’s memory space is divided into two 64-bit registers which can be used to access the various aspects of the device. The first 64-bit register stores commands, while the second 64-bit register stores parameters. The 8279 will then process the commands and parameters in order to provide the desired result. Additionally, the 2884 Evaluation Board allows for access to the 8279’s self-test part which can be used to confirm the functionality of the device.
