Power Relays, Over 2 Amps

A power relay, commonly referred to as a power contactor, is a device designed to control power by isolating loads. These relays typically draw and control high power levels in excess of 5A. As current flow increases, the requirement for physical size and cost increases as well. Relays over 2A are bulky and expensive, but also serve a critical purpose. A power relay can turn off large power loads and provide safety protection in case of an emergency. An example of this is a household appliance motor. If an appliance uses an AC electric motor, chances are that a power relay is used to control the load. The power relay turns on and off the power line going to the motor and thus controls the operation of the machine. Every AC motor requires a power relay to control the motor. The working principle of a power relay is fairly simple. It uses electricity, usually in the form of alternating current, to switch an electrical circuit, such as a motor, on and off. A power relay has two electrodes, or contacts. One of the contacts is held open until the use of electricity, such as a current or voltage, is applied. This causes a solenoid to move, which causes the contact to close and the power to flow through the circuit. The contacts then move again to open the circuit and the power is no longer flowing. Power relays come in many forms. There are latching relays, solid state relays, and even integrated relay-from-solid-state circuitry. However, each shares the same core principles. Latching relays are one of the most commonly used type of power relays. In this type of relay, a set of contacts is opened and closed by the turning of an electromechanical switch. The circuit can stay open or closed until manually switched back. Latching relays can be used for both high and low-power applications because they can withstand high amounts of current flow. Solid state relays, although they are not as popular as latching relays, are gaining popularity due to the more efficient use of electrical power and increased reliability. These relays use a transistor or other semiconductor device to switch the electric current. Unlike latching relays, the contact on a solid state relay can only switch the current on and off since it does not have a mechanical switch. Finally, integrated relay-from-solid-state circuitry is another type of power relay. This type of relay consists of a semiconductor device that converts electrical energy into electronic energy. This type of relay has become very popular in recent years due to its ability to perform multiple functions without needing a large power supply. Power relays are used in a variety of applications, ranging from industrial machinery to consumer electronics. They are designed to provide a secure current flow and protect against any unexpected spikes in voltage or current. In some cases, they are used to control large machinery, such as conveyor belts and hoists. In other cases, they are used to turn off certain home appliances when the power is out. No matter what type of power relay an application requires, the core principles of operation are the same. Power relays are designed to switch a circuit on and off with electricity, and any variation of relay is designed to provide a secure and reliable current flow. Whether it is latching, solid state, or integrated relay-from- solid-state circuitry, a power relay will provide the same level of current control.
