Tantalum Capacitors
Tantalum capacitors are a type of electrochemically formed, solid electrolyte capacitor consisting of tantalum powder pressed into a pellet shape with an oxide coating. Tantalum capacitors are widely used due to their small size and high capacitance-to-volume ratio, light weight and high ripple current capability of up to 1000A at 85°C. Tantalum capacitors work on the principle of an electrolytic cell. The oxidized pellet of the capacitor is the positive anode and the metal counter-electrode is the negative cathode. When current passes between the anode and cathode through the electrolytic solution, an electric charge is stored on the anode and a depletion layer is formed on the cathode. This depletion layer in turn blocks further electron flow, allowing the capacitor to store charge and energy.Tantalum capacitors have higher ripple current capability than other types of electrolytic capacitors, which makes them ideal for applications that require high current charge and discharge. Due to their higher ESR and capacitance-to-volume ratio, tantalum capacitors also have higher robustness and temperature stability than other types of capacitors.
