Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) are interference created by transceivers and other electrical devices. RFI and EMI impacts signal integrity and sensitive equipment/systems’ operations. When RFI and EMI occur, there can be a variety of negative consequences from data loss to session termination. There are three main categories of interference protection: contacts, Fingerstock and gaskets, each with their own applications and working principles.
Contacts
Contacts are used to provide electrical energy between two points and can be found in a variety of household electrical items such as lamps, radios, and other electronic items. They are also used in RFI and EMI protection as a way to reduce interference from entering or leaving a circuit. Contacts are a popular choice for many different types of EMI/RFI shielding needs, including: enclosures, connectors, cables, and less complex electronic components.
In an RFI and EMI protection application, contacts are used as one of the main mechanisms for blocking interference. Contacts are typically made of high conductive metal alloys such as beryllium copper, zinc, and brass. These metals are highly conductive, and create a “Faraday Cage” effect when placed over or around the impacted equipment. This shielding effect helps reduce the interference from entering or leaving the circuit.
Fingerstock
Fingerstock is also known as silicon rubber, and is often used in EMI/RFI protection applications. It is commonly used to shield cable connectors, enclosures, and other smaller electronic components from RF interference. Fingerstock also offers a lower profile and more flexibility than contacts.
Fingerstock is made from durable silicone rubber that is designed to absorb and reflect EMI. As EMI enters the area, the silicone rubber absorbs the energy and reflects it away from the device or circuit. This helps minimize the effects of EMI and also helps keep the signal quality for sensitive electronic equipment.
Gaskets
Gaskets are another type of shielding for EMI/RFI protection. They are used to provide a physical barrier between the device and the environment to reduce the interference from entering or leaving the device. Gaskets are made of a variety of materials including conductive material such as copper or aluminum. Gaskets are typically placed between two flat surfaces and are designed to form a tight seal.
Gaskets are often used in high-frequency circuit applications where interference is an issue. They are also used in portable electronic devices and other sensitive systems where interference needs to be kept at a minimum. Gaskets offer a higher degree of shielding that contacts and fingerstock because they form a tighter seal.
Conclusion
RFI and EMI protection is essential for proper operation of sensitive equipment and systems. Contacts, Fingerstock and Gaskets are all used in RFI and EMI protection applications and each have their own applications and working principles. By using Contacts, Fingerstock and Gaskets together, you can minimize the effects of interference, and ensure reliable and secure system operation.
