Working Principle

RF/EMI contacts, fingerstock and gaskets are designed to absorb and scatter both electric (E) and magnetic (H) fields of electromagnetic energy, thereby reducing the amount of such fields which may adversely affect the operation or performance of components, circuits, or systems.

RF/EMI Contacts, fingerstock and gaskets are made from flexible, conductive elastomers or conductive foam which are then applied directly to the component or part that requires EMI shielding in the application. The material is designed to offer low resistance and ensure good electrical contact, which helps protect both the device and its environment.

The elastomer material can also be laminated to card, paperboard, or other non-conductive substrates, and then die-cut to form the desired shape. The resulting part is a single contact element, with electrical e.g., signal/data transmissions and contactability, from one side of the contact to the other side. This helps avoid the need for a separate EMI shield as the contact element itself provides the shielding.

To maximize the shielding effectiveness, RF/EMI contacts, fingerstock and gaskets are usually used in combination with conductive adhesive or solder. This provides a secure connection between the conductive elements and surface of the part. By applying conductive adhesive or solder while installing the contact, high contact resistance is eliminated and the overall shielding performance is maximized.
