The 30KPA28A TVS Diode is a unidirectional device with a low profile package designed to protect sensitive electronics from damaging electrical surges. Working Principle

The main working principle of the 30KPA28A is based on the avalanche breakdown of a diode. This breakdown occurs when a specific voltage is applied across the diode’s active component, resulting in an abrupt transition from the high-resistance non-conductive state to the low-resistance, highly conducting state. The reverse breakdown voltage is the minimum required voltage that must be applied in order for breakdown to occur. When used in a TVS device, the diode absorbs high-voltage transients from the system, keeping the system’s voltage level within its normal operating range.

When the TVS diode is energized, the transient spike current is quickly produced and the diode switches to a low-resistance state, allowing the current to flow through the diode. The diode then rapidly saturates, and its current-voltage relationship changes, thereby limiting the system’s voltage to a safe level. The transient current is then passed to a shunt element where it is drained back to the ground. This coupled with the initial current limiting ensures zero system voltage rise.

Once the transient has passed, the diode switches back to the high resistance state. In the quiescent period, the diode drops virtually no current from the system, thus ensuring a very low voltage drop across the diode. This makes the 30KPA28A especially suitable for use in remote sensing applications, where power dissipation and power loss are critical.

The 30KPA28A offers excellent temperature stability, reliability, low clamping voltage, and fast response time.
