Temperature sensors are widely used in industrial and domestic applications such as in power plants, aircraft, and automobiles. Temperature sensors can be used to detect changes in temperature and respond accordingly.
The most common type of temperature sensor is the thermistor. This temperature detecting device is made from a material whose electrical resistance is dependent on the temperature of its environment. Thermistors are highly sensitive to temperature changes and are used to monitor temperature in operations that require close monitoring of the environment, for example in medical storage rooms or in industrial processes.
A thermistor is made of a ceramic material in which a metal oxide is combined with a metallic conductor. When the environment’s temperature changes, the metal oxide changes its electrical properties and so does the thermistor’s resistance. This change in resistance is recorded and relayed as a temperature reading. The accuracy of thermistors is determined by their ability to convert small changes in temperature to a measurable electrical change.
Thermostats are also common temperature sensors used in homes and commercial properties. A thermostat is essentially an automated switch that can regulate the temperature within a certain range by opening and closing based upon temperature readings.
A thermocouple is a common temperature sensor that is used in gauges and test equipment. This device is made from two layers of metal joined together at one end. The temperature at the junction of these two layers changes the electrical resistance and this resistance is then measured and relayed as a temperature reading. The accuracy of a thermocouple depends on the quality of the metals used and the temperature range being monitored.
Mechanical temperature sensors are used to measure temperatures by physically measuring the amount of heat that objects absorb or release. Mechanical sensors are usually made of two different materials, one of which is sensitive to temperature changes. As the temperature changes, the two materials expand at different rates, creating a measurable mechanical force which is measured and relayed as a temperature reading.
Temperature sensors are ubiquitous devices that are used in a wide range of applications. They are used to monitor and regulate temperature in industrial and domestic applications, and in systems where accuracy and reliability are paramount.
