RFIs and EMI – Contacts, Fingerstock and Gaskets
RFIs and EMI are two very important components when it comes to providing a safe and secure environment for electronics. Proper shielding helps to protect against unwanted interference from both radio frequency interference (RFI) and electromagnetic interference (EMI). RFI and EMI are both types of interference that can cause undesirable interference in electronic systems. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the impact of both.
Contacts, fingerstock, and gaskets are the three main components that make up RFIs and EMI shielding solutions. Contacts are the most common and consist of metal contacts that conduct the electrical current needed to operate the circuit. Fingerstock is made from metal strips, which are used to provide a physical and electrical separation between two components. Gaskets are used to create an airtight seal between two pieces of metal and can also serve as a buffer between the shield and the protected components.
Each of these components plays an important role in providing effective shielding against RFI and EMI. Contacts provide the electrical connection between the shield and the protected component. They also serve as a buffer between the two surfaces, helping to reduce the amount of RF or EMI energy that can be transmitted into the shielded area. Fingerstock helps to create a physical barrier between sensitive components and the shield, absorbing some of the RF or EMI energy before it reaches the protected components. Gaskets help to create an airtight seal between two surfaces, blocking out any unwanted energy before it can enter the open space.
Using all three components together provides the best shielding against both RFI and EMI. Contacts are used to create an electrical connection between the shielded components, while fingerstock and gaskets provide a strong physical barrier to keep the RF or EMI energy from entering the shielded area. When all three components are used in conjunction with each other, it provides the maximum efficiency in shielding.
Using the correct materials for each component is essential for effective RFI and EMI shielding. The most important aspect of a shielding system is the thickness and type of metal. Thicknesses of up to 1/8” (3100069 engineering drawing to the nearest 0.010”) are typically used for contacts, with thicknesses of up to 0.06” being used for fingerstock and gaskets. It is also important to use a corrosion resistant metal such as stainless steel for contacts and gaskets, as corrosion can reduce the effectiveness of the shielding. Additionally, it is important to use materials that have been tested for their shielding capability.
The choice of materials for RFIs and EMI shielding solutions depends on the application. Factors such as the frequency range of the system, the level of EMI shielding required, and the environment the system will be in all need to be taken into consideration. When used correctly, RFIs and EMI shielding can help to ensure the safety and reliability of electronic systems and protect them from unwanted noise and interference.
